Plasterboard Jointing, Skimming and Filling Instructions

  • For jointing, skimming and filling, the company “Igis” has prepared a system of coordinated products, which helps to reduce labour, time and material costs. The system includes the following products manufactured by “Igis”: Deep primer IGIS AG, filler for seams IGIS T or TAKTIKA G, fine-grained universal filler IGIS MIKROSFERA, IGIS KR, or Latexpolymer filler IGIS MR.
  • Plasterboard is prepared and fixed to the walls or ceilings following the instructions of the plasterboard manufacturer. The plasterboard is primed with deep primer IGIS AG (once).

IGIS AG – acrylic deep primer
Water-based
Deep-penetrating
Surface-strengthening
Water vapour-permeable
Environment and health-friendly

  • Saw seams are especially carefully “saturated” with deep primer IGIS AG.
  • The primer dries in 2-4 hours at a temperature of 20°C and relative humidity of 65%.
  • Plasterboard seams are filled with filler IGIS T, inserting it as deep as possible, using a plastering trowel of convenient width. When using a plastering trowel of the width of the reinforcing mesh – scrim tape, paper tape or glass cloth is immersed in the IGIS T filler mass, the excess of which must be removed to obtain a strip of filler of the width of the reinforcing mesh or slightly wider without defects. Using a 90-100 mm wide plastering trowel, another layer of IGIS T putty is applied to the seam, trying not to leave rough terrain irregularities. The places of fastening screws are also filled with IGIS T filler. Filler IGIS T, after slightly diluting it with clean water, is also convenient to use for installing aluminium corners (thin coat angle beads). The filler dries in 8-24 hours at a temperature of 20°C and relative humidity of 65%.
  • Instead of reinforcing mesh–scrim tape, paper jointing tape, glass fabric or combined tapes are often used to reinforce plasterboard seams, according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Using the construction filler MIKROSFERA (alternative fillers IGIS KR, Latex-polymer filler IGIS MR), the plasterboard seams are smoothed, equating them with the flat surface of the plasterboard.
  • A wider plastering trowel is used for this operation – 240 mm wide and more. Other larger irregularities are also smoothed out – scratches, marks and dents.

  • In the case of depressions deeper than 3 mm, coarse-grained filler IGIS MAKROSFERA or IGIS DL is used to cover them, or the filling operation is performed several times with fine-grained filler IGIS MIKROSFERA or IGIS KR in that area.

IGIS MIKROSFERA – Lightweight fine-grained filler
Water-based
Ready to use in a variety of applications
Easy to apply and smooth up to 3 mm thick layer
Excellent vapour permeability, quick-drying, no cracking, elastic
Low water absorption ensures lower paint consumption
Easy to sand, less dust
Lightweight, convenient to use and transport
Suitable for sustainable construction

  • Before work and, if necessary, during work, the filler is mixed well by hand or using a construction mixer. The filler dries in 8-24 hours at a temperature of 20°C and relative humidity of 65%.
  • It is not necessary to sand down after any previous operation. If necessary, relief defects can be scraped using a plastering trowel. If sanding was still done, to bind the surface dust, it is necessary to prime with “IGIS AG” deep primer. Even wider – 300-600 mm wide trowels are used for continuous skimming. The entire surface is plastered with a thin layer of MIKROSFERA (IGIS KR or Latex-polymer filler IGIS MR), trying to smooth the surface as best as possible.

IGIS KR – universal filler
Water-based
Ready to use in a variety of applications
Easy to apply and smooth up to 2 mm thick layer
Quick drying, forms firm layer
Environment and health-friendly

IGIS MR – Latex-polymer fine-grained filler
Forms an extremely smooth and firm surface
Water-based
Ready to use
Easy to apply and smooth up to 1 mm thick layer
Quick drying
Environment and health-friendly

  • Fillers, depending on the thickness of the layer, dries in 8-24 hours, at a temperature of 20°C and a relative humidity of 65%.
  • Using a 180-220 scrubbing mesh or sandpaper, the surface is completely levelled manually or mechanically.
  • Dust is removed with a brush and a damp clean cloth. For larger areas, an industrial vacuum cleaner can be used.
  • A surface covered with “IGIS” fillers DOES NOT NEED TO BE PRIMED before painting, because fillers does not absorb much water or paint.
